Mystery Flower

Can anyone ID this plant for me? It came from the woods in the mountains of NC - I've had it in the ground four years and this year it went crazy, spreading like mad. Long, bright green sword-like leaves, multiple medium purple blossoms on each stem.

Thanks in advance, plant nerds!

Shoot. I thought Daniel would have had the answer by now.

Could it be spiderwort?

Leah came up with it. It's Chinese Ground Orchid.

Well, how did THAT make it to North Carolina?

There's actually a theory! the pollen or seeds or whatever floated on the jetstream and ran into the mountains and fell down. Or something! La la la, there's wine.

But there are several plants in Appalachia that only exist elsewhere in Asia.

That's fascinating. Truly. I see some reading in my future.

DG, It looks like a hardy orchid which Tyrone grows in his yard in NC. He bought it at Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill, NC.
